Megastar Mammootty was the chief guest at the anti-liquor campaign held to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Kochi on Sunday. Talking at the event, the actor shocked the audience by sharing his experience in connection with alcohol abuse.
He said that he visited a central prison as part of a film shooting and met a convict serving a life term. Asked why he was convicted, the man said that he had killed his college-going son when he saw the son trying, under the influence of alcohol, to rape his own mother.
Mammootty said that this incident showed him that people could do any inhuman act under the influence of alcohol and drugs. He also pointed out in his speech that the new generation is taking to liquor and drugs at an early age and asked parents to keep a watch on their children always.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the function organised by the Excise Department.
“Alcohol cannot be banned by the government unless alcohol consumption comes down by a large scale. The government shall henceforth honour youth groups working against drug and alcohol abuse with awards and recognitions,” he said.
Incidentally, Mammootty is also involved in the ‘Vazhikati’ campaign that creates awareness among schoolchildren against the use of drugs and alcohol.
The campaign is now active in 50 schools in Kerala.
